I spent $2,000 on Telegram outreach in 6 months. Here's what actually worked (and what was a waste)

Honest breakdown of $2,000 spent on Telegram lead generation over 6 months.

TL;DR: Spent $2,000 over 6 months on Telegram outreach. 47 meetings booked, 11 deals closed, $18,400 revenue. Biggest waste: buying aged accounts. Biggest win: hyper-personalized first messages.

Throwaway because my main account has client info. Been doing Telegram lead gen for a B2B SaaS (project management tool for dev teams) since January. Here's the raw, unfiltered breakdown.

The Setup (Month 1)

Started with 5 accounts. Bought 3 "aged" accounts from a reseller ($15 each — total scam, more on that below). Created 2 fresh ones myself.

Monthly costs:

    • 5 accounts (proxy + SIM): $180

    • Outreach tool (24go.site): $75

    • Time: ~15 hours/week

    • Total: ~$600/month

Target groups: 50+ Telegram communities where CTOs and engineering managers hang out. Not random groups — I manually verified each one had active discussions, not just spam channels.

What I Tried (And Whether It Worked)

Generic connection requests

"Hi, I'd love to connect. We help dev teams ship faster."

Response rate: 2.3% — Absolute garbage. Out of 200 messages, 4 replies. Zero meetings.

Hyper-personalized first messages

"Saw your comment in [group] about CI/CD bottlenecks — we ran into the same thing at [Company]. Fixed it with [approach]. Curious if you've tried something similar?"

Response rate: 23.7% — 45x better. Out of 190 messages, 45 replies. 12 meetings booked.

Buying aged accounts

3 accounts from a reseller. All 3 got flagged within 2 weeks. Telegram detected them as suspicious (probably recycled). Lost $45 and 2 weeks of warmup.

Verdict: never buy accounts. Just create fresh ones and warm them up properly.

Follow-up sequences

First message → wait 3 days → follow-up 1 → wait 4 days → follow-up 2 → wait 7 days → final follow-up.

Follow-ups added 38% more meetings. Most people don't reply to the first message. That's normal.

Joining groups first, THEN messaging

This was the biggest unlock. Instead of cold-messaging, I joined 10 groups, participated for 2 weeks (shared insights, answered questions), then started conversations with people who engaged with my comments.

Response rate: 41% — but lower volume (only 50 messages). Still, 20 replies and 8 meetings from just 50 messages.

Biggest Lessons

    • Personalization is everything. "Hi" vs "Hi [name], saw your post about [topic]" — the difference is 10x response rate.
    • Don't buy accounts. Create fresh, warm them up for 2 weeks, then start outreach.
    • Join groups first. 2 weeks of "being a normal human" in a group > 2 weeks of cold-messaging.
    • Follow up. 38% of my meetings came from follow-up messages. Most people don't reply to the first one.
    • Track everything. If you don't know your response rate per message template, you're guessing.
    • Quality > quantity. 200 personalized messages > 2000 generic ones. Every. Single. Time.

What I'd Do Differently

    • Start with 3 accounts, not 5. Too many accounts = too much management overhead.
    • Spend more time in groups before messaging. The "warm" leads converted 3x better than cold.
    • Set up automated follow-ups from day 1. I wasted 2 months doing manual follow-ups.
    • Focus on 15 groups, not 50. Depth beats breadth.

Is It Worth It?

Absolutely. $2,100 → $18,400 is a 776% ROI. But here's the catch: it took 15 hours/week of my time. If you value your time at $100/hour, the real cost was $2,100 + $39,000 (time) = $41,100. Still profitable, but much tighter.

The real question is: could I have gotten the same results with email outreach or LinkedIn? Honestly... probably. But Telegram works well for the Russian/CIS market where LinkedIn penetration is low.
